We are now accepting applications for fall placements. The CHITREC Internship Program offers a comprehensive and pragmatic view into the dynamic world of health information technology. At CHITREC, we believe meaningful use of electronic health records (EHRs) will be a transformative force to improve the quality, safety and value of health care for all Chicagoans. As a CHITREC intern, you would be part of making that change happen. Interns are challenged with real project experience and introduced to the inner workings of a start-up minded organization.
Along with a specific project and overall experience with the organization, CHITREC ensures that internships are supportive and inclusive for individual growth. Team education and one-on-one mentoring are key to the success of the program.
CHITREC is based on Collaboration, Trust, Leadership, Service and Community. We seek individuals with the same passion and ambition to drive change now and help shape the future of the health IT workforce.
CHITREC internships feature high impact projects that provide tangible and practical experience. Internships vary, but they begin with a 3 month period that may continue for another 3 months based on project needs and performance. Work schedules are flexible, but are usually 20 to 40 hours per week.
As an intern at CHITREC, you would be assigned to work on one or more projects based on interests, experience and the needs of the organization. The full range of projects fall under the categories of Technology/Clinical Informatics, Outreach and Education, HIT Implementation, and Research.
Typically, a diverse team will be assembled to work on each project and will be responsible for meeting set goals and deliverables. This means that you would get tangible and practical experience with your internship at CHITREC.
Current and planned projects include:
- Provider Outreach
- Clinical EHR Implementation
- Organization Sustainability Strategy Project
- Social Media Marketing Campaign
- Practice Workflows
- EHR Usability Testing
In addition to opportunities offered directly through the extension center, CHITREC also sponsors internship activities with partners across the Chicago area. These partners can be part of the academic, government or commercial sector, but all partners are committed to providing CHITREC interns with a high quality mentored experience.
CHITREC internships offer experiences for individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and education. We are seeking smart, motivated and passionate people who have a genuine desire to learn and grow in the health IT arena. Applicants should be comfortable using a computer for daily tasks and learning about various forms of IT, have experience or education in health care and/or IT, and enjoy working with others and sharing ideas with a team.
CHITREC internships are conducted during regular business hours (Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm) at the CHITREC office or partner organization’s office. We are unable to accommodate those individuals who only have evening and weekend availability.
CHITREC offers paid internships that are $10/hour. If you are an undergraduate or graduate student who is interested in receiving college credit, CHITREC offers unpaid internships that can be arranged with your school. All applicants must be able to work legally in the United States.
How to Apply
CHITREC internships were previously cyclical in nature with assignments beginning in May and November. However, in order to better meet our needs and the needs of our partner organizations who also mentor our interns, we will now be filling internships on an as-needed basis. Interested individuals can apply for an internship at any time, and applications will be kept on file for 6 months. If you are not contacted for an internship within 6 months of applying, but are still interested in being considered for open positions, please re-submit your application. Due to the large number of applications, we are unable to respond to individual requests. You will receive a confirmation email when your application is received.
